This diamond is war booty. It was once owned by Panembahan Adam, the sultan of Banjarmasin (Kalimantan). The stone belonged to the state heirlooms, symbols of the sultan’s sovereignty. After his death, the Netherlands intervened in the battle of succession. In 1859 Dutch troops violently seized control of Banjarmasin and abolished the sultanate. The rough diamond was sent to the Netherlands, where it was cut into a rectangle of 36 carats.

This diamond once hung on a chain around the neck of Sultan Panembahan Adam van Banjarmasin (South Borneo). After problems arose in the succession, the Netherlands decided in 1859 to – forcibly – seize control of the sultanate of Banjarmasin. The diamond was declared Dutch state property. In Amsterdam the 70-carat rough diamond was later cut into a rectangularshaped diamond of 36 carats.

Na diens dood mengde Nederland zich in de opvolgingsstrijd. In 1859 veroverden Nederlandse troepen met geweld Banjarmasin, en hieven eenzijdig het sultanaat op. De ruwe diamant werd naar Nederland gestuurd waar hij werd geslepen tot een rechthoek van 36 karaat.
