Katoen (monster)

Monster van zeer fijn en zacht geweven katoen. De standaardmaten voor dergelijke rollen katoen waren 7 ch'i breed en 40 cha lang. Deze lap heeft een daarvan afwijkende maat. Cotton fabric without a pattern was woven on a loom by a manual labour. It was usually produced in the width of 32~36 cm and the length of 20m. It was produced as a yellow colour, only to be whitened following a bleaching process. It was used for a cloth for use in the four seasons, contributing to such clothing as, skirts, jackets, coats, trousers, vests and bed clothes. Ten cotton seeds smuggled out of Yuan China in 1363 by a Koryo official, Mun Ik-chom, gave root to the Korean cotton industry that has since provided fabric and clothing for the Korean people. Once so popular and universal that it was as good as currency, mumyong, homespun and woven cotton, disappeared with the mechanization of the textile industry.
