Paar sandalen

362-39 Pair of Papago sandals; hide; l. 25.5 cm., w. 10 cm.; ca. 1880. Sandals were required to travel through the rough desert terrain. Their soles were cut from stiff rawhide, and leather thongs, two passing between the toes, the others around the heel, were tied around the leg (cf. Russell 1908:122). This pair has a two-layered sole, with the bottom layer thicker than the upper, probably made from recycled harness-leather as both show tooled pattern. One piece has a series of non-functional perforations, and an incised pattern, probably derived from its earlier use. The leather thongs go through two holes at the ankles and a hole between the toes, providing a secure lashing.
